Olivia joined the lab in 2021 through the Microbiology PhD program. Her research centers on understanding animal-microbe symbiosis, from evolution to mechanism. Olivia uses metaproteomics to explore host response to association with bacterial symbionts and mechanisms of microbe-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility in insects. More recently, Olivia has started to explore mobile genetic element-mediated genome evolution in bacterial symbionts of marine invertebrates. Prior to joining our lab, Olivia graduated with a BS in Biology and a BA in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where she completed her honors thesis in the iMESA Lab under the direction of Dr. Patrick Erwin on the gut microbiome of dolphins during an unusual mortality event.
