We’re excited to celebrate Matteo Rios, who has successfully completed his Master of Science in Biochemistry through the Interdisciplinary Biochemistry Master’s Program at North Carolina State University.
Matteo conducted his master’s research in the Kleiner Lab within the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, while being academically housed in the Departments of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry. His thesis, titled “Benchmarking Metaproteomic Workflows for Viral Protein Detection Using a Defined Synthetic Viral Community,” focused on developing and validating standardized workflows for viral metaproteomics.
In his work, Matteo benchmarked seven different sample preparation strategies using a defined six-member synthetic bacteriophage community and evaluated their performance using high-resolution mass spectrometry. The study integrated analyses on an Orbitrap Eclipse Tribrid and Orbitrap Astral mass spectrometers, with data processed using Proteome Discoverer and PEAKS Studio, and further validated workflow performance in complex biological matrices.
Matteo’s work contributes valuable insights toward improving reproducibility and sensitivity in viral protein detection, an important step forward for virome and microbiome research.
Following his successful thesis presentation, the lab celebrated with a champagne (and sparkling cider!) toast to mark this milestone. Congratulations to Matteo on this achievement, and best wishes for his next steps!
